The Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers will meet in the NBA Finals for the third consecutive year — kicking off with Game 1 on Thursday, June 1 — the first time in Finals history two teams will face off for the title three years in a row.

Cleveland enters as the defending champs after knocking off Golden State in seven games last year, famously rallying from a 3-1 deficit as LeBron James and Co. delivered the Cavaliers their first NBA title.

The Warriors won the first finals meeting between the teams in 2015 (4-2), as Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green brought an NBA championship to the Bay Area for the first time since 1975.

The teams split the two regular-season meetings during the 2016-17 season.

History repeats itself. Once again, the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers are facing off in the NBA Finals, and once again, the Warriors have taken a 1-0 lead at Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. After beating the Cavs by 15 in Game 1 of last year’s Finals, the Warriors decided to one-up themselves by clobbering Cleveland 113-91 on Thursday. The Warriors outscored the Cavs in all four quarters.

After what may be considered the longest preseason in history, the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers have resumed their battle for NBA supremacy with their third straight NBA Finals matchup.
The outcome of this year’s series will determine not just this year’s champion, but also how we view the previous two. Was Cleveland’s historic comeback in 2016 a temporary interruption of Golden State’s dynasty, or the beginning of its own?

The Warriors protected their home court in Games 1 and 2, outscoring the Cavaliers by a combined 41 points while improving to 14-0 in the playoffs. It’s eerily reminiscent of 2016 when the Warriors won the first two games by 48 points, with one exception: Kevin Durant, who’s been more productive in two games than Harrison Barnes, the man he replaced in Golden State’s starting lineup, was in seven.

Either way, the Cavs will attempt to claw their way back into the series in the familiar confines of Quicken Loans Arena. Game 3 tips off in Cleveland on Wednesday, June 7 at 9 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on ABC and streamed live online at WatchESPN.
